Proper
nutrition consists of many things. Some people insist on
counting calories while others believe in eating as much
protein as possible. Proper nutrition and health really
deals with what we eat and how our bodies process the things
we eat. Eating too much of one thing or depriving it of
others completely is not proper nutrition. Our bodies need
a balance of protein, carbohydrates and fats to maintain
proper nutrition.
Calories
are converted into energy when we consume them and are
therefore very important to our bodies. Per gram,
carbohydrates and protein provide 4 kcal and fat provides 9
kcal per gram. Fat provides the body with more energy than
either protein or carbohydrates making it necessary that we
consume some type of fat. When the body needs energy, it
will release glucose that has been stored up. Glucose is a
simple carbohydrate that our bodies store up making
carbohydrates also very necessary to our diets. This stored
glucose is called glycogen. Glucose is often used to fuel
most of our bodies cells as it is easily attainable from the
body. Our bodies cannot only use fats for energy so its
vital that we are consuming enough carbohydrates so our
cells have enough energy. Protein also plays a different
role in our body other than making glucose. Having a diet
with zero carbohydrate intake would be detrimental to our
health.
Aside from
glucose (carbohydrates), amino acids are extremely important
to our diets. Amino acids are the building blocks of
protein. Protein is responsible for many of our bodily
functions including growing, repairing and replacing
tissue. Proteins build our bodies structures. If you are
in taking more protein than you are outputting, protein will
be retained in your tissues and new muscle will be added.
If however you are not consuming enough protein in your
diet, your body will be degrading muscle and will not be
building to its full capacity.
Carbohydrates, protein and fats work very closely together
in our bodies to ensure proper functioning. Fats and the
glucose from carbohydrates combine together for energy so
that protein is not broken down into energy. This way,
protein can focus on its job, which is to make more muscle.
Fat is very important to the body and is its main source of
energy. However, if not enough fats and not enough
carbohydrates are consumed, the body will turn to protein,
breaking it down to use its energy. For proper nutrition,
our bodies need a balance of fats, proteins and
carbohydrates for proper nutrition.
